When Barack Obama was speaking at a rally in North Carolina on Friday, he was booed. His reponse was a class act.
Summarising the events later at his own rally in Pennsylvania, Donald Trump characterised the president's response as 'unhinged'.
Previously Trump has dealt with opposition by saying ruefully that 'In the good old days law enforcement acted a lot quicker than that' and said he wished he could hit his hecklers, urging his supporters to do so instead.
In fact, this is what the president really said, as reported by Gregory Korte of USA Today and as recorded on tape.
The gentleman booing received boos in return from the crowd, but Obama told the crowd to stop.
Now, listen up! I'm serious, listen up. You've got an older gentleman who is upporting his candidate. He's not doing nothing -- you don't have to worry about him. This is what I mean about folks not being focused.
First of all, we live in a country that respects free speech.
So, second of all, it looks like maybe he might have served in our military, and we've got to respect that.
Third of all, he was elderly, and we've got to respect our elders.
And fourth of all, don't boo --
The audience responded 'VOTE', which has been the refrain of much of the Democrat's recent speeches and rallies.
