Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has mocked Republicans for “[taking] a week to read The Cat in the Hat”, as she praised Democrats for passing a coronavirus support package.
The comments from the congresswoman, often known by the initialism AOC, comes after the House of Representatives voted for the bill on Wednesday.
A tweet from AOC read: “This week in Congress:
“Dems: Passed $1.9T COVID package to deliver stimulus checks (w/ dependents!), cut child poverty in half, extend $300 UI, prevent cuts in state + local services, largest-ever investment in Native communities, etc
“GOP: Took a week to read The Cat in the Hat.”
AOC’s dig follows outrage from Republicans after the company responsible for managing the estate of children’s author Dr Seuss announced it would stop publishing six of his titles due to portrayals which are “harmful and wrong”.
Critics have claimed the move is an example of “cancel culture”, with Donald Trump Jr sharing a photo of The Cat in the Hat on Instagram in response to the decision.
Elsewhere, House minority leader Kevin McCarthy posted a five-minute video to social media on Saturday, in which he read Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham in full.
“I still like Dr Seuss, so I decided to read Green Eggs and Ham. RT if you still like him too,” McCarthy tweeted.
Neither The Cat in the Hat nor Green Eggs and Ham are among the six books listed by Dr Seuss Enterprises.
