Donald Trump is embroiled in yet another racism controversy, this time after a thinly veiled attack on progressive Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, but the victim of his insults has fought back in style.
In the kind of Twitter tirade that would once have seemed unworthy of the office, Trump suggested that those House Democrats not born in America should “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came”. While Trump failed to name names, his tweets contained all the subtlety of a frying pan to the back of the head.
AOC has taken to Twitter and responded with the kind of eloquence and intelligence you might expect from an occupant of the White House in a less horrifying timeline. One of her pointed posts read:
You are angry because you can't conceive of an America that includes us. You rely on a frightened America for your plunder.
This is not to mention the fact that both Trump and Ocasio-Cortez were born in New York City. AOC went on to say:
But you know what's the rub of it all, Mr. President? On top of not accepting an America that elected us, you cannot accept that we don't fear you, either. You can't accept that we will call your bluff & offer a positive vision for this country. And that's what makes you seethe.
The most perfect aspect of all this is that Trump’s original tweet mentioned the congresswomen “coming from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe”. It is, of course, worth bearing in mind that AOC comes from America and even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
