90-year-old Holocaust survivor arrested in Ferguson

A 90-year-old Holocaust survivor was arrested in Ferguson yesterday as protests over the shooting unarmed of teenager Michael Brown by police entered their second week.

Hedy Epstein was arrested for "failing to disperse" outside Missouri governor Jay Nixon's office, during a demonstration against his decision to deploy National Guard troops to deal with the unrest, KMOV report. At least seven others were arrested.

Ms Epstein, who lives in St Louis, told the Nation as she was being led into a police van:

I’ve been doing this since I was a teenager. I didn’t think I would have to do it when I was 90. We need to stand up today so that people won’t have to do this when they’re 90.

Ms Epstein was born in Germany in 1924. She was rescued from Nazi Germany in 1939, travelling to England via the Kindertransport before immigrating to the United States in 1948. She is well known for her pro-Palestinian activism.
