A white female employee of a Mississippi campground who has now been dubbed 'Campground Carla' has been fired after she pulled a gun on an African American couple trying to enjoy a picnic.
Jessica Richardson, of Macron, filmed the elderly white woman approaching her and her husband holding a gun, at the Kampgrounds of America in Starkville, north-east Jacksonville, on Sunday, reports the Daily Mail.
The woman, who reportedly manages the campground, can be seen approaching the couple with a gun drawn, before asking the couple to leave when she found out that they didn't have a reservation.
However, the couple claim that when they spoke to the front desk, they were told that it wasn't necessary for them to be staying at the campground in order to enjoy a day by Oktibbeha County Lake, reports the Daily Mail.
Taking to Facebook on Sunday, Jessica Richardson, of Macon, shared the video, which has now been watched more than 12,000 times, along with the caption:
RACISM IS ALIVE AND WELL!!Â
Today was a beautiful day so my husband (who’s a vet), our 2 year old dog, and myself, decided to Google a lake to visit and have a picnic.
We found a lake located in starkville, ms and decided to visit. Not five mins later a truck pulls up and a white lady screams at us, she then jumps out of her truck with a Gun.
And proceeded to point it at the 3 of us, simply because we didnt make reservations.
After leaving my husband stopped by the office and talked with her husband (they're the property managers). The husband tells my husband that reservations aren't needed for the lake. This happened In Starkville,Ms.
In the video, the elderly woman can be seen arriving in a truck, before she draws a gun from her pocket.
In the video, Richardson can be heard saying:
This lady just pulled a gun because we out here and don't have reservations.
The only thing you had to tell us was to leave, we would have left. You didn't have to pull a gun.
In response, the woman says:
Well I'm just telling you you need to leave because it's under private ownership.Â
You can't be out here.
Kampgrounds of America released a statement on Tuesday after the footage went viral. In the statement, they said they were investigating the incident and that they'd fired the employee:
KOA Inc is aware of the situation that occurred Sunday, May 26th at the KOA franchise in Starkville, Mississippi.Â
KOA is currently looking into the matter and reaching out to all of the parties involved.Â
Kampgrounds of America prides itself on providing a welcoming, safe environment for everyone to enjoy the outdoors.
On social media, some have been dubbing the white woman in question 'Campground Carla' as she's the latest in a long string of white people who have harassed black people for simply going about their day.
Last April, a woman went viral and was dubbed 'Barbecue Becky' after she called the police on a group of African Americans who were attempting to have a barbecue by a lake. Other examples include a white man calling the police on a black mother and child for using a swimming pool, and a black couple being arrested for disputing their bill in a Waffle House outlet.
