Why people are calling this police officer a hero

It may have been another bad week for police in the US, but at least one officer has been making headlines for all the right reasons.

Andy Black has been hailed a hero after feeding and nursing a baby whose mother had suffered a seizure at a shopping mall in Kansas.

“By the time I got there, the lady had recovered somewhat, and was sitting on a seat with a small baby in a carrier at her feet,” the grandfather of 14 explained to local station Fox4KC.

“She was still shaking very badly, and I was afraid that she would drop the baby,” he added.

A photo of the Overland Park officer feeding the child was captured by passer-by Jilli Nel, who told Fox4KC: “I looked and there he was holding this little, tiny bundle of joy just feeding her. The two of them were just in their own little world.

It was so beautiful, it just touched my heart so much, that I had to stop and just talk to him, and ask him if I could take his picture.

After uploading the photo to Facebook on 31 May, where Nel Black as a "quiet hero going beyond his duty", the post was widely shared and subsequently picked up by the media this week.

Responding to the positive feedback and all the attention he'd received, Black told BuzzFeed: "I can’t believe it, to me it’s such a small thing, but I’m glad it worked out the way it has because law enforcement can use some positive reinforcement."
