There's a worrying trend in Tom Cruise films

Today we wish a Happy 55th Birthday to Tom Cruise.

After nearly 40 years in the industry, he continues to churn out chart-topping films and be an international heartthrob.

However, there's a worrying trend in his films.

As Tom Cruise gets older, his female co-stars stay the same age.

In 1986 Tom Cruise featured alongside Kelly McGillis in Top Gun. She was 28 at the time.

And now his co-star, three decades later, the female lead of The Mummy, Annabelle Wallis, is 32 years old.

As a successful male actor Tom Cruise has been able to age well into his 50s and remain the running-jumping-shooting-kissing lead, with no sign of slowing up.

But the women around him don't seem to be getting much older - and it's a consistent trend.

In 2014 he was the lead in the dystopian action Edge of Tomorrow with Emily Blunt who was 31 at the time.

Rebecca Ferguson, star of the never ending Mission Impossible series, is 33.

And in American Made, a film due for release later this year, Tom Cruise's wife will be played by Sarah Wright who is more than 20 years younger than him.

So no matter how many birthdays Tom Cruise has, it seems the women around him will never age.
