Being a Beijing born beauty queen, Arianna Quan's crowning as Miss Michigan and subsequent entry into the Miss America contest has been big news on Chinese social media.

Quan was born in the Chinese capital but moved to the US at the age of 6. She's fluent in Mandarin and is clearly proud of her mixed heritage.

She explained to Michigan Live:

During this election year I realized how important it was for immigrants and naturalized citizens especially to speak out about their experiences in this country.

We are so diverse and it's so important for all of us to embrace that. That's why my platform is what it is and hopefully going to Miss America in this election year I can raise awareness about what it means to be an American.

Despite going through days of competition before being named the winner ahead of more than 30 entrants by an expert judging panel - trolls on Chinese social media site Weibo have bizarrely been disparaging about Quan's looks.

Some messages on the site, translated by Shanghaiist, read:

She's ugly AND she isn't Chinese.

She's ruining the reputation of Chinese people.

This is probably the American standard of beauty. She looks exactly like Mulan in Disney.

Oh. She's probably very beautiful on the inside.

Anyway, forget about the trolls, she's received a lot of positive support on Facebook:
