This fundraiser painted her own disabled parking bay after the council took 6 months

A paralysed fundraiser has painted her own disabled parking bay outside her daughter’s school after her the council did not get round to it in nearly six months.

Claire Lomas, who walked the London Marathon in 17 days in a specially adapted suit in 2012, said she had repeatedly asked Leicestershire County Council for a bay so she could drop four-year-old Maisie off.

What caused the delay?

No explanation was given. The request, backed by the school, was first made in April, but when the new year began the lines had still not been painted.

Ms Lomas, of Eye Kettleby, near Melton Mowbray, said:

It was my daughter’s first day at school and it was a big day for her and me, but I had to drop her off at the bottom of the hill.

I wanted to see her in, but I couldn’t.

The 35-year-old, who was paralysed by a riding accident in 2007 and raises funds for spinal injury charities, headed down to the school armed with paint and stencils. It took her and a friend 40 minutes to paint the pink and yellow lines – the colours were chosen by Maisie.

A council spokesman said:

We would like to apologise for the delay ... and the inconvenience this has caused Claire and Maisie during the first weeks of term.

Ms Lomas said she was considering issuing an invoice.
