An Alaska Airlines stewardess has shared her experience of dealing with a sexist passenger on a flight.

Amber Nelson posted a Facebook status explaining how she was preparing to fly out of Seattle airport when a man loudly made inappropriate remarks about her colleague.

She wrote:

Today I had an experience that drove home so powerfully the way it feels to be a woman in the world today.

Amber and her colleagues were running through their safety checks when a male passenger called out “Ooh, sexy!” as one of them demonstrated how to use a life vest.

She explained:

He was in a middle seat with a woman on either side of him - they were clearly uncomfortable. Just in front of him, the two women in my row and I exchanged uncomfortable glances.

She also pointed out:

Every woman I know has been through this kind of degrading experience. We were trapped on a plane with a guy who clearly disrespected women and saw us as his own personal entertainment.

He insisted that he was “just playing” and did nothing wrong, but the team decided they should take further action.

That's when another airline colleague arrived on board and asked the man to gather his belongings and leave the plane.

Amber said:

It was everything we could do to keep from applauding as he was led away.

Her Facebook post has since had more than 18,000 reactions and been shared almost 4,000 times.

She concluded:

I felt honoured as a patron of the airline - and as a woman - because Alaska Airlines supported their staff and those of us on board who were demeaned by another passenger's juvenile and exceedingly disrespectful behaviour. Thank you for taking this seriously.
