An ice skater performed to a Lil Jon song and the internet went wild

A figure skater made audiences smile at Thursday's US Figure Skating Championship when he unexpectedly performed his routine to Turn Down For What by DJ Snake and Lil Jon.

The crowd burst into applause as the song filled the stadium in San Jose, California.

Even the commentators were left speechless as Jimmy Ma commenced his routine.

The video of his energetic performance sparked a frenzy on social media.

Speaking to BuzzFeed on Friday, Ma said:

We kind of wanted to make something that had a lot of excitement.

Something to get the older generation excited and also draw in a new audience.

At the end of the brief performance, one announcer said:

For Jimmy Ma to make that accessible to me, shows what a great skater and an artist he is and can be.

Before 2014, figure skaters at international championships could only compete to music without lyrics. But the International Skating Union changed the rules that year in a move to increase the sport's appeal to younger audiences.
