A relative of Einstein called Ivanka Trump out for mis-attributing a quote to him.
First daughter Ivanka Trump posted a tweet in 2013 quoting Einstein.
The tweet reads: “If the facts don’t fit the theory, change the facts.” - Albert Einstein.
"If the facts don't fit the theory, change the facts." - Albert Einstein #quote #sunday— Ivanka Trump (@Ivanka Trump) 1372010304
The problem is Einstein never said. That’s particularly awkward when it’s to do with a quote about the importance of facts.
What’s even more awkward is that a representative of the Einstein estate sent out a correction.
The representative, most likely a relative, confirmed that Albert Einstein never said this quote.
They then suggested that Ivanka Trump purchase The Ultimate Quotable Einstein book.
Trump never responded to the correction.
But Twitter users took the opportunity to make up other quotes.
@IvankaTrump "Just make up quotes and attribute them to me. The people who support you won't care that you're lying." - Albert Einstein— The Singing Owl (@The Singing Owl) 1500821603
@IvankaTrump "Don't believe everything you read on the Internet." -Abraham Lincoln— wigglywag (@wigglywag) 1500820705
@IvankaTrump "If the quotes don't fit your ideology, change the quotes" - George Orwell #sarcasm #fakequote— Scot Close (@Scot Close) 1500828616
We think we'll be triple-checking who famous quotes are by before using them from now on.
