Grant Shapps suffered a humiliating demotion when he lost his job as Conservative chairman on Monday night.
He leaves the Cabinet to become a minister of state in the Department for International Development.
Mr Shapps vanished during the later stages of the election campaign after being accused of editing the Wikipedia entries of his Tory rivals and allegedly changing his page to delete embarrassing items.
Just before the election campaign he apologised after admitting he falsely denied having a second job after becoming an MP.
He said he “screwed up” by insisting “over firmly” that he hadn’t had the job, enduring a torrid cross-examination on Newsnight.
