Angela Merkel recently toasted and roasted United States President Donald Trump following a meeting of the G7.
The German Chancellor said:
The times in which we could completely rely on others are on the way out.
I’ve experienced that in the last few days.
We Europeans truly have to take our fate into our own hands.
She then took a swig of beer, because Germany:
Germany buys more US made goods than any European country other than the UK.
Despite this fact Donald Trump decided to threaten a trade war.
Reuters reported that German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel reacted to this tweet rather calmly, hinting that Germany is just waiting for this whole Trump thing to be over soon.
He said:
The United States are older and bigger than the current conflict.
It is inappropriate that we are now communicating with each other between a beer tent and Twitter.
He's not wrong on both counts.
The Italian Prime Minister said he agreed with Angela Merkel that Europe needed to focus on its own future:
This takes nothing away from the importance of our trans-Atlantic ties and our alliance with the United States. But the importance we put on these ties cannot mean that we abandon fundamental principles such as our commitment to fight climate change and in favour of open societies and free trade.
The international community increasingly seem to be taking Donald Trump as a clown throwing his weight around, and not a world leader to be regarded seriously.
Makes sense.
