Bankers who retrain as teachers are 'exhausted' by the hours

Bankers who quit their jobs to retrain as teachers are being driven out of the profession and back into their previous roles by the unmanageable workload, teaching leaders have said.

Teachers are working from 6am until 11pm because of more bureaucracy, according to the Association of Teachers and Lecturers.

Allison Barnes, a national executive member of the union, spoke of a senior banker who "has done two years in teaching and she cannot believe the level of exhaustion she has experienced... we have lost her, she has now gone back to her job in banking."

A Department for Education spokesman said:

We are working with the profession and education experts to take action on the root causes of teacher workload.
