What makes you posh? What does posh mean? Many people have a lot of questions about this.

Especiallyobservers of the UK’s class system, who may not be familiar with saying 'napkin' instead of 'serviette', or 'loo' instead of 'toilet.'

One way to check if you're posh or not it is to look at the kind of cultural activities you enjoy.

Apparently, going to the opera is the poshest thing one can do, according to a study released last week.

YouGov put the question to more than 1,600 British adults and found that 76 percent thought events of the operatic kind were the hallmark of class.

Ballet came in second at 72 percent, and going to an art exhibition is third at 50 percent.

Going to the theatre meanwhile, is only considered posh by 36 percent of those surveyed, much higher than watching a film at the cinema, which two percent think is posh.

Writing in the report, data journalist Matthew Smith said:

British opera has spent years trying to throw off its elitist image. Whether it is trying to improve accessibility to the masses by lowering ticket prices, hosting pop-up operas or even holding productions featuring thick Northern accents, the industry is evidently trying to bring more mass appeal to the medium.

However, it seems such efforts have a long way to go.

On the other hand, some activities were deemed “not posh.”

  • Going for a meal at a pub
  • Going to a bingo game
  • Going to see stand-up comedy
  • Going to a live music gig
  • Going to the cinema

However, the report also found that age plays an important factor in what is considered posh. Young people are more likely to regard certain activities as more classy. Among 18-24 year-olds, 58 percent thought going to the theatre was posh compared with only 22 percent of those aged 65 and over.
