Back in 2006, New York University undergrad student Jack Dorsey was sitting in a brainstorming session of the podcasting company Odeo.

He had dreams of setting up a simple SMS service which would allow a small group of people to communicate with each other. The initial name for the company was 'twttr' - a name inspired by short form text speech and Flickr.

It was also because the domain name Twitter.com was then in use, an issue that was soon solved.

By 21 March of that year, the first ever tweet in the history of mankind was posted and it simply read 'just setting up my twttr'.

It was short, innocent and to the point. Little did Jack know that 12 years later he would be the head of a multi-billion dollar company that has virtually changed the way we process information and the news.

It's a website that has become a breeding ground for hateful rhetoric and conspiracy theories, that allows deranged world leaders to say whatever they want without any consequences and the abuse of vulnerable people.

Unfortunately, that's the only sort of stuff that you hear about in the news as we are suckers for punishment and can only accept that everything is terrible and there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

Yet, because it's Christmas and we've endured another 12 months marching to the drum of our inevitable death, which will take longer than a Sarlacc does to digest Boba Fett, here are 32 tweets that were so good they achieved more than 100,000 retweets, which is a higher number than the population of Great Yarmouth.

Please enjoy and try to have a Merry Christmas.
