Turkish men are wearing miniskirts to campaign for women's rights

Men in Turkey have been marching and posing for photographs in miniskirts this week to campaign for women's right as protests spread across the country.

The protests have been in response to the murder of a young woman - Ozgecan Aslan. The 20-year-old student was abducted and clubbed to death by a bus driver who had also allegedly tried to rape her.

Many have spoken out against a culture of sexual violence in the country as a result and many women have shared their experiences of assault and misogyny under the hashtag #sendeanlat.

Men have posed in miniskirts on social media to protest against an attitude that goes along the lines of "if a woman is wearing a miniskirt then she is being provocative".

The BBC reports that some on Facebook have used the caption:

If a miniskirt is responsible for everything, if [wearing] a miniskirt means immorality and unchastity, if a woman who wears a miniskirt is sending an invitation about what will happen to her, then we are also sending an invitation!

Although the miniskirt protest was started by men in neighbouring Azerbaijan on social media, Turkish men have picked it up and have been seen in Istanbul this weekend.
