This coffee 'gives men an erection with every cup' - and the government isn't happy

A new brand of coffee called Stiff Bull, dubbed ‘The Relationship Saver’ claims to:

Greatly improve sexual health, libido, and overall wellness.

The ‘herbal’ brew contains a number of naturally-derived ingredients, including Guarana, Maca Root and Tongkat Ali, a Malaysian plant said to have Viagra-like properties.

There was even an ABC news documentary about it, which is available on the Stiff Bull website.

Chris Keelan, the guide, said:

Will it work as quickly? No. But it also won’t cause potential heart attacks, stroke; potential deafness or blindness.

Seems safe, and surely it's been approved by the relevant food regulatory bodies?

Well… not exactly.

The Stiff Bull website states:

Actually, no dietary supplement is ‘approved’ by the FDA. They are, however, stringently regulated and must comply with the provisions of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 as regulated by the FDA.

Moreover, the FDA examined an international shipment of the coffee.

According to a government press release:

FDA laboratory analysis confirmed that Stiff Bull Herbal Coffee contains desmethyl carbodenafil. Desmethyl carbodenafil is structurally similar to sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra.

This undeclared ingredient may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs such as nitroglycerin and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. Men with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease often take nitrates.

Keith Hanson of Stiff Bull told indy100:

[The issue] is a combination of things – one, the manufacturer of the coffee, located in Malaysia, had lots of different formulas, and he’d been importing his coffee in the US for 10 years. There were never any substances found.

However Hanson claims that the manufacturer began to add desmethyl carbodenafil to cut the cost of the Maca Root and the Tongkat Ali, without his knowledge.

He also said that of the 20 boxes that had been stopped by the FDA, only five had contained the ‘trace element’.

We changed manufacturers a month ago. None of the consumers will get the tainted batch.

It is an alternative to Viagra. Our focus and mission is to stay clear of that. [We have had] no complaints from customers and no side-affects associated with Viagra.
