Brexiters are trying to blame the vegetable shortage on Europeans

Some supermarkets are putting a limit on the number of iceberg lettuces and broccoli customers can buy, blaming weather conditions in Spain.

A BBC weather forecaster said weather conditions have been extreme in areas where crops are grown - including cold weather, snow, wind and rain.

The reason we have a shortage in Britain is because we import an estimated 50 per cent of our vegetables and 90 per cent of our fruit.

More than 90 per cent of iceberg lettuce in Europe comes from one small region in south east Spain, according to fruit and vegetable wholesaler Nick Padley.

He explains that his supplier is trying to bring in lettuce from the US, but it costs a lot more that way.
