Perhaps unsurprisingly, the people of France consume more cheese than any other other nation on Earth.
According to a report by the International Dairy Federation, the average Frenchman ate 25.9 kilograms of cheese in 2013 compared to second-placed Iceland (25.2kg) and third-placed Finland (24.7).
Despite producing more varieties of cheese per head of population than any other country, Britain falls outside the top 10 with a mediocre consumption of 11.6kg, behind the US which consumes 15.4kg per capita.
As the Wall Street Journal points out, 2.4 millions tons of cheese were traded around the world last year, and increase of two per cent on the year before.
