The 'Zodiac Killer' is one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in American history.
Between 1968 and 1969 a serial killer murdered five people in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The killer would often leave cryptic clues for police and journalists as to his identity - but the case was never solved.
Multiple theories, books and films have been written about those crimes but no one has landed a concrete conclusion.
Director David Fincher even turned the story into a very compelling and convincing movie in 2007 but that only lead to more questions than answers.
Republican Senator Ted Cruz, who was born in 1970, is definitely not the Zodiac killer. But that didn't stop the Internet suggesting so.
A meme suggesting that Cruz was Zodiac, despite being born a year after the last killing took place, was birthed in 2013.
A tweet by @RedPillAmerica mocking a Cruz speech, declared that his address was called 'This is Zodiac Speaking' referring to phone calls and letters allegedly made by the Zodiac which would start with that very line.
There is literally nothing more to it than that but the idea of Cruz being the Zodiac quickly spread like wildfire and was even brought up ding the 2016 White House Correspondents' Dinner.
A public poll from Florida in February, 2016 found that 10 percent of Republicans in the state actually believed that Cruz was the Zodiac.
Yes, really.
Even his wife, Heidi, has had to confirm that Cruz is not the "Zodiac Killer".
During an interview withYahoo News she said:
Well, I’ve been married to him for 15 years and I know pretty well who he is, so it doesn’t bother me at all.
There’s a lot of garbage out there.
Just when we thought we couldn't debunk this theory anymore, Cruz himself goes and throws a spanner into the works by acknowledging the meme.
This came after his fellow Republican Senator Ben Sasse referenced another Cruz theory in a tweet, that claims that Cruz's father was involved in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
This wild accusation was first made by none other than President Donald Trump, as reported by The New York Times.
This is what Sasse tweeted after he spilt a can of Dr Pepper during a senate hearing.
Which prompted Cruz to respond with one of the Zodiac's puzzles.
Why would you fan these flames?
