Taylor Swift defended a gay musician after some of the ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ singer’s fans criticised her for an important point she made about homophobia.
Hayley Kiyoko recently spoke to Refinery29about her experiences being LGBT+ in the music industry and as a woman whose love interests in music videos are other women.
She said:
I’ve had several music industry execs say ‘You’re doing another music video about girls?’ I literally looked at them and was like, um, yea...Taylor Swift sings about men in every single song and video, and no one complains that she’s unoriginal.
I’m not over-sexualising my music. I make out with women because I love women, not because I’m trying to be sexy. That’s not to turn heads — that’s my life.
However many Swift fans heard her criticism of double standards as criticism of Taylor Swift herself, and keyboard warriors fans took to the internet to defend Swift.
According to BuzzFeed, one wrote:
Maybe don’t perpetuate the myth about Taylor’s songs only being about her love life? Her biggest hit Shake It Off isn’t, Mean isn’t, Safe and Sound isn’t, Ronan isn’t, 22 isn’t, ????
Another told Kiyoko to “take Taylor out of [her] mouth and f**k off”.
A fan wrote on Tumblr she was “sad” about what Kiyoko said, but another of Swift’s fans defended her.

Swift reblogged the comment and responded perfectly:
Exactly. We should applaud artists who are brave enough to tell their honest romantic narrative through their art, and the fact is that I’ve never encountered homophobia and she has. It’s her right to call out anyone who has double standards about gay vs straight love interests.
Boom.
Kiyoko tweeted her appreciation.
