Stormzy is fast becoming a "national treasure" - at least among the progressive left who probably hate the term to begin with as it's usually reserved for old boring white people who we all know probably voted Tory.
Seemingly unafraid to take on anyone he disagrees with, Stormzy has this morning gone on a rightful rant after headlines seemed to misconstrue his words when asked about racism in the UK.
In an interview with Italian newspaper La Repubblica he was asked whether the UK is a racist country. His response:
Definitely, 100 per cent. It's like: 'Oh no, we're not racist'. But there's a lot of racism in the country.
It seems clear that he's saying that he 100 per cent believes the UK to be racist, however many have interpreted it as him saying the UK is 100 per cent racist - in other words, everyone in the country is racist. Clearly, this is not what he meant, and he's popped over to Twitter to clarify.
However, by the looks of his mentions there are lots and lots of white people who haven't bothered to read the quote and are taking exception with the idea that Stormzy - who will never have interacted with them in his life - has essentially called them racist. The self-importance needed to reach this conclusion is literally another level, but that's what we're dealing with here.
It appears that people have decided that being called racist is worse than actually being racist... 2019 ladies and gentlemen and nonbinary folks - the year white fragility ate itself.
In summary, everyone seems to have willfully misinterpreted Stormzy's quote. But also, if a person of colour tells you about racism and you're white, maybe just take a seat and listen to what they have to say before deciding the best course of action is to express your indignation at having your privilege pointed out, yeah?
