#Repealthe8th: Campaigners in 25 cities across the world are marching to legalise abortion in Ireland

Activists, campaigners and expats came together in unity across the world on Saturday to protest Ireland's abortion law.

Coinciding with the Abortion Rights Campaign's (ARC) March For Choice in Dublin, protestors will show their support in cities from Paris to Phnom Penh, New York to Sydney.

All aim to raise awareness of the Republic's abortion ban and hope their efforts will support calls for a referendum on the issue.

ARC spokeswoman Janet O’Sullivan said: “We are tired of the delay tactics being used by successive governments who bury their heads in the sand, ignoring the urgent need and desire for change.”

Ireland's controversial Eighth Amendment equates the right to life of a pregnant woman with that of an embryo or foetus.

In doing so, it criminalises abortion in all cases with the exception of where it would endanger the mother's life.

According to the Abortion Rights Campaign, this infringes on Irish women's human rights and goes against international human rights norms.

They also claim it no longer reflects public opinion in the country.
