The Department for Work and Pensions has admitted to fabricating comments from supposed 'benefit claimants' that appeared in a leaflet about sanctions.
The leaflet used stock images and 'testimonies' from people who claimed to have interacted with the sanctions system and found it of benefit to them.
However the 'quotes' were not direct quotes from any real cases and the photos were stock images.
In response to a freedom of information request from Welfare Weekly, the department said:
The photos used are stock photos and along with the names do not belong to real claimants. The stories are for illustrative purposes only.
Of course.
The department say that the “case studies” have since been removed, but their memory lives on through the wonderful medium of Twitter ridicule.
