This maths question has completely divided the internet

A maths question has divided the internet and is causing the kind of rifts last seen during the great political upheavals of 2016.

The question, posed by @pjmdoll on Twitter reads as follows:

8÷2 (2x2) =?

Plenty of online bods were adamant that the answer to the question was one.

There was, however, another school of thought that was equally certain that the answer was 16.

The internet was well and truly divided and neither side would budge an inch.

And who was right? Well, it appears the question was poorly worded and in fact either answer was correct.
