These iconic film posters photoshopped out men to make a fantastic point

In case you don't know, it's International Women's Day, which means we're celebrating all the progress women have made in society, the workplace and...mainstream media.

But if there is one thing that the Bechdel test has taught us is that women are not yet represented enough in fiction.

And while 2018 and 2019 have seen female reboots of the likes of Ghostbusters, Ocean's 8 and more ladies in leading roles, there is still a lot of work to be done (Best director's category at the Oscars, we're looking at you).

To show just how much work there is to do, here is a collection of posters of the highest grossing films in the past decade, showing how few women really are in leading roles.

According to new research, there are 196% more men than women in highest grossing films as of the first three months of 2019. This is compared to 117% more men than women in 2018.

If that doesn't shock you, how about the fact that the same research found that for every leading woman in cinema, there are 2.5 leading men.

While these numbers are pretty discouraging, there is no doubt that women will keep working hard to change them around. It's time to get to work.
