Emma Thompson has joined Extinction Rebellion’s climate change protest and people don’t know how to feel about it.
Thompson is loved by many people for her acting career and it’s good to see a celebrity backing action on climate change.
But on the other hand, Extinction Rebellion isn't the most popular protest group.
Some people have warned that the group’s call for “ecological justice” and disruption tactics are going to turn off normal people.
And there’s also the fact that Thompson flew from LA to London for the protest, provoking critics to call her a hypocrite.
It would be better if she didn't have to fly across the Atlantic to attend the protest, but this thread explains why the “hypocrite” argument is a bit silly.
People all over the world contribute to climate change every day and one flight is not a particularly major cause of pollution.
At the very least, she is doing something to raise awareness of the issue.
This is especially important when so many of her critics aren't going to suggest any serious action to stop climate change.
Negative responses to Thompson’s decision to join Extinction Rebellion generally focused on her alleged hypocrisy.
Or just attacked her for being privileged and “out-of-touch”.
But the actor did have some supporters, who praised her for standing up and doing something while so many celebrities ignore climate change.
There aren’t any simple answers to whether Extinction Rebellion are doing the right thing.
But instead of arguing about who's a hypocrite, we should all be thinking about what we can do to help save our environment.
