By now we shouldn't be surprised when Donald Trump says something that is completely ridiculous. And yet he still never ceases to amaze us.
Amid the controversy of his child separation policy, attacking Angela Merkel and being criticised by a former First Lady, Trump thought it would be a good idea to channel his inner Emperor Palpatine.
During a press conference on Monday, the president renewed his ambitions to establish a space branch of the United States military. Trump said:
It is not enough to merely have an American presence in space - we must have American dominance in space.
I am hereby directing the Department of Defense and Pentagon to immediately begin the process necessary to establish a space force as a sixth branch of the armed forces.
We are going to have the Air Force and we are going to have the Space Force—separate but equal. It is going to be something. So important.
I was saying it the other day, because we’re doing a tremendous amount of work in space - maybe we need a new force, we’ll call it the space force.
Will this ever happen? Probably not, but you've gotta admire Trump's ambition.
However, this grand idea has already been quashed by Senator Bill Nelson, who explained why it would never see the light of day.
I mean he might have stood more of a chance if he'd have thought of a better name for it. 'Space force' sound like some awful straight-to-video sci-fi film made in the 1980s starring a former bodybuilder.
As you can imagine, Trump's 'space force' has gone down a treat on Twitter and is being mocked harder than all of those Last Jedi hot takes from middle-aged men on YouTube.
Trump has previously laid out plans of one day visiting Mars, which is something that we imagine Elon Musk would be very interested in hearing about.
