Outgoing US president Barack Obama used his commencement speech at Rutgers University in New Jersey on Sunday to launch a thinly veiled attack on the most controversial candidate eyeing up his job - Donald Trump.
Picture: Eduardo Munoz Alvarez/Getty ImagesSpeaking to the graduating class of 2016, Obama criticised the conservative culture of isolationism in a world threatened by global issues like climate change.
Referring to Trump's proposed border wall with Mexico, Obama said:
A wall won’t stop that... The point is, to help ourselves, we’ve got to help others, not pull up the drawbridge and try to keep the world out.
While he didn't name him, the president made it clear he was talking about Trump's controversial stances and statements on ethnic minorities, women and the "rejection of facts".
In politics and in life, ignorance is not a virtue. It’s not cool to not know what you’re talking about. That’s not keeping it real or telling it like it is. That’s not challenging political correctness. That’s just not knowing what you’re talking about.
The criticisms weren't lost on the presumptive Republican nominee. He took to Twitter on Sunday evening to quote Obama - but in doing so it looks like he thinks ignorance is a virtue and it's left most of us pretty confused:
'In politics, and in life, ignorance is not a virtue.' This is a primary reason that President Obama is the worst president in U.S. history!
Unless it's badly worded and he means Obama himself is ignorant? Not sure why we're giving Trump the benefit of the doubt here.
Ignorance might be bliss but sadly we're all too aware of the upcoming possibility he might be president...
