After a series of incredibly awkward interviews and a period of absence towards the tail end of the campaign, things weren't looking good for Diane Abbott.

The veteran Labour MP and close ally of Jeremy Corbyn was seen by many to be 'letting the side down' when it came to outlining policy and promoting the party's exceedingly popular manifesto to the electorate.

She quickly became the butt of many Conservative jokes, specifically during the debate, with both Theresa May and Amber Rudd criticising her maths, memory recall and ability as shadow Home Secretary.

Despite the barrage of negativity from the other side of the aisle, and a torrent of vile sexist and racist abuse on Twitter, Ms Abbott can hold her head high once again after returning a stupendous victory in her constituency of Hackney and Stoke Newington.

With a 12.2 per cent increase of the vote from the 2015 election, Abbott has walked away with a stunning 75.1 per cent of the vote overall (42, 265 votes) - truly trouncing her Conservative opponent Amy Gray, who received 7, 126.

As one Twitter user pointed out:

Many others were quick to point out the same.

Fun fact.

Fun fact number two.

Diane tweeted on the morning of the results.
