Actress-turned-politician Cynthia Nixon has spoken in highly critical terms about the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency in a series of speeches.
Nixon who is best known for her time on the popular TV show Sex and the City is currently running as a Democratic gubernatorial candidate for the State of New York.
In a speech given at St. Paul and St. Andrew United Methodist Church on the Upper West Side, Nixon offered her support to Guatemalan immigrant Debora Vasquez-Barrios, who has fears that she may be deported.
In her address at the church, the 52-year-old labelled ICE a "terrorist organisation." The New York Post quotes her as saying:
ICE has strayed so far away from its mission.
It is supposed to be here to keep Americans safe but what it has turned into frankly is a terrorist organisation of its own that is terrorising people who are coming to this country.
She later reinforced this statement in a tweet where she also shared a link to a petition calling for ICE to be abolished.
She further called for the abolition of ICE when she appeared on the ABC News show The View on Thursday.
During a roundtable discussion she said:
I think it's important to know also parents and children aren't just being separated at the border. They are being separated throughout this country by ICE.
I think we need to abolish ICE. That seems really clear. They have strayed so far from the interests of the American people and the interests of humanity.
Nixon also took to opportunity to mock Trump, who this week signed an executive order to end his own immigrant family separation policy as he had effectively signed an agreement to keep children safe from him.
She added:
I guess I am glad he has signed this executive order against himself, protecting them from him.
I wish he would sign some more executive orders protecting all of us from him.
