Canada is already in love with its new Liberal prime minister Justin Trudeau

Canada's Liberal Party has just swept to a stunning victory in national elections, giving the country a new leader, Justin Trudeau, for the first time in a decade.

And what a leader.

Trudeau, the 43-year-old son of former prime minister Pierre Trudeau, has been the subject of a Milifandom-style surge in popularity in recent weeks.

We're willing to guess Trudeau's playfulness (he once kissed a gay talk show host on national TV) and the regularity with which he takes his shirt off probably have something to do with it.

Although he's definitely not the only world leader with a penchant for going topless.

While polls initially indicated the race would be tight, Trudeau's impassioned campaigning has been credited with fuelling anti-Conservative sentiment and leading the Liberals to a conclusive victory.

The soon-to-be-sworn-in prime minister is pro feminism, legalising marijuana, increased taxation for the one per cent, and has promised to tackle climate change seriously.

Speaking to supporters in the early hours of Tuesday when the Liberal Party's absolute majority was all but certain, Trudeau said:

This is what positive politics can do... I didn't make history tonight, you did.

Liberal Party candidates secured 183 seats, comfortably exceeding the total of 170 needed to form a majority government. With just 99 seats, Stephen Harper and his Conservative Party are now out of power after four terms in office.

The rest of the new government is made up of the centre-left New Democratic Party, who won 42 seats, separatist party Bloc Quebecois with 10, and the Green Party with one MP.
