Elle Bradford became an unexpected hit at a Bernie Sanders rally on Friday after a photo of her breastfeeding ignited debate across the internet.

Bradford, from Ohio, bought her six-month-old daughter Harper along to a Cleveland rally when Harper decided she was hungry - and she wasn't going to wait to be fed.

Speaking to a local news station, Bradford said:

There is no, 'I'm feeding you in 10 minutes' - It's 'I'm feeding you right here, right now, or you're screaming'.

Bradford breastfed Harper whilst continuing to cheer along with the crowd, not missing a second of the action.

The moment was captured by a photographer and pretty quickly 'BoobsforBernie' was one of the odder hashtags trending on social media.

Bradford wrote about her 15 minutes of internet fame in a Facebook post which received more than 4,000 likes and 1,400 shares before it was removed from public view, mentioning how pleasantly surprised she was that most reaction has been positive.

Bradford, who describes herself as a longtime public breastfeeding advocate, said after the rally Sanders and his wife Jane O'Meara Sanders approached her:

Bernie and Jane O'Meara Sanders both thanked me for doing what mothers do and taking care of my daughter when she needed her mom, even if that meant nursing in public!

Bradford said she'll be at the Democratic hopeful's follow-up Cleveland event next week - and Harper will be coming too.
