The BBC subtitles had a complete meltdown trying to translate Emmanuel Macron

The BBC subtitles had a complete meltdown trying to translate Emmanuel Macron

News about Brexit is seemingly breaking the entirety of Great Britain, none more so than the people trying to cover it.

Irish prime minister Leo Varadkar was visiting Paris to meet French president Emmanuel Macron because of the Brexit situation the UK has blindly wandered in to.

Their meeting was being broadcast on the BBC and something interesting happened.

Macron, speaking typically in French, was addressing the cameras but if you're not fluent in the language you might rely on subtitles to decipher what's being said.

Well, you'd hope that the subtitles are actually working in the first place:

As you can see from the video, the subtitles start off strong, but during Mr Macron's address, things take a turn.

Seemingly just sacking the entire job off, the subtitles instead tried to capture what was going on more succinctly.

They read:

*SPEAKS FRENCH*

While it is eloquently put and rather matter of fact it doesn't quite help people understand what's being said.

It's unclear if there is someone writing the subtitles live or if it's being generated electronically.

Regardless, people on Twitter saw the funny side of the mishap.
