The ongoing joke, as tiring as the event of the year, is that 2016 has been an annus horribilis.

Cast your minds back to May - and David Cameron, Matteo Renzi, François Hollande, Barack Obama and Angela Merkel were still enjoying stability in power.

Fast forward to December and see how the situation has changed.

  • David Cameron resigned following the EU referendum, replaced by Theresa May.
  • Matteo Renzi offered the Italian president his resignation as Prime Minister. He is expected to stand down when the senate passes a 2017 budget.
  • François Hollande is the outgoing president of France at the elections next April. He announced that he will not run for a second term earlier this month amid terrible opinion poll ratings.
  • Barack Obama will leave office in January to be replaced by Donald Trump.
  • Angela Merkel is seeking a fourth term as chancellor in next year's elections.

Or, simplified:

The image was taken on 7 June 2015 at the G7 meeting at Schloss Elmau in Germany, and cropped out were president of the European Council Donald Tusk, Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, Canada's prime minister Stephen Harper and president of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker.

What a time to be alive.
