Fourteen-year-old boy accidently empties his mum’s bank account playing FIFA

A mum has been left distressed a few weeks before Christmas after her teenage son accidently spent her entire month’s salary playing a PlayStation game.

The woman, who is from Cork but wished to remain anonymous, purchased the FIFA 18 game (age rated 3+) for her 14-year-old son with her debit card.

What she – and her son- didn’t realise is that it has in-game purchases, The Irish Mirror reported.

A few days later, the lady tried to take money out of her bank account only to be told she has insufficient funds. Her entire month’s salary, including the bonus she received, was spent.

Speaking to PJ Coogan on Cork’s 96FM, she said:

He [her son] just didn’t understand but every ten points was costing him more money. I think you need the points to move players but I am not aware of how it works.

When purchasing the game or playing it they don’t tell you that this has a cost element. He didn’t have to do anything or click anything to activate my card.

He never knew that when he was clicking away the money was being taken out of my account.

The mum swiftly contacted PlayStation, who informed her FIFA 18 is an adult's game, and cannot return her money.

Now, she’s taken it upon herself to warn other parents.

Maybe there was [a lock or warning system in place] but my 14-year-old son didn’t see it. He did not have to put in card details or anything as my card was already registered.

Her son is “so upset” by what’s happened he’s blaming himself and, according to his mum, hasn’t left his room.

PlayStation has been contacted for comment.
