Brexiteer Darren Grimes isn't as widely ridiculed as others, such as Nigel Farage and Jacob Rees-Mogg, but he has an unbelievable ability of owning himself on Twitter.

Grimes rose to infamy during the EU referendum after it was revealed his pro-Brexit group aimed at young people had received funding from the official Vote Leave campaign.

Since then, Grimes has championed himself as a representative of the 'common man' and rallying against anything remotely associated with the EU.

On Thursday, he posted a tweet complaining about the fact that he was asked to prove his age when attempting to buy a can of Red Bull, which is a perfectly legal thing for a shop assistant to have done given the high levels of caffeine in the drink.

Grimes wrote:

ID'd at 25-years-old for a sodding Red Bull, watch out kids, the caffeine might kill ya!

Do you remember when this country believed in freedom and personal responsibility?

Unfortunately for Darren there are many, many things wrong with this phenomenally bad tweet and the rest of Twitter has more than happy to let him know about it.

Firstly, there were those pointing out that it is the law to ask those who look under the age of 25 for ID when purchasing energy drinks, which can be pretty dangerous when drunk in vast quantities.

Then there were those that felt it was as good a time as any to remind Darren that he did break electoral law.

This is exactly why we voted to leave the EU, isn't it? To gulp highly caffeinated drinks without any care in the world.

Darren clearly didn't learn anything from this torrent of abuse and started to complain about the UK going 'soft' because energy drinks come with age restrictions.
